Biography

Martin Stervander is a postdoctoral research fellow on a three-year grant from the Swedish Research Council. In the Cresko Lab at the Institute of Ecology and Evolution (IE2), University of Oregon, he conducts research in comparative genomics of syngnathid fishes. With a background in phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses of birds, his overall research interests span microevolutionary dynamics to large-scale macroevolution. Martin has published over 20 papers that have been cited over a thousand times.

Education

  • Ph.D. Evolutionary Biology, Lund University, Sweden (2015)
    • Thesis: “On Speciation in Birds – Genomic Signatures Across Space and Time”
    • Advisors: Drs. Bengt Hansson and Staffan Bensch

Honors & Awards

  • 2020: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowship (for Natural History Museum London)
  • 2018: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Seal of Excellence
  • 2017-2020: Swedish Research Council International Postdoc Fellowship

Appointments

  • 2020-2022: Marie Curie Fellow, Natural History Museum London, UK
  • 2017-2020: Swedish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Oregon
  • 2016: Postdoctoral Researcher, Linnaeus University, Sweden
  • 2011-2015: PhD Student (employed), Lund University, Sweden
  • 2002-2003: Warden and Acting Warden, Ottenby Bird Observatory, Sweden

Research Interests

  • Speciation: Understanding how new species arise and maintain reproductive isolation
  • Phylogenomics: Reconstructing evolutionary relationships using genome-scale data
  • Comparative Genomics: Identifying genomic changes underlying phenotypic evolution
  • Ornithology: Evolutionary biology of birds, particularly island species
