Code of Conduct

This workshop is committed to providing a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for all participants, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, religion (or lack thereof), or level of programming experience.

This Code of Conduct applies to all workshop spaces — in-person sessions, office hours, online forums, chat channels, GitHub repositories, and any informal social events around the workshop.

Expected behavior

We expect participants to:

  • Be respectful and inclusive. Treat everyone with kindness and assume good faith. Recognize that other participants may have very different backgrounds and experience levels.
  • Be patient with learners. Everyone is learning something here — including the instructors. There is no such thing as a “stupid question”.
  • Give credit. Cite tools, papers, and tutorials you build on.
  • Use welcoming and inclusive language. Avoid jargon when a plain alternative exists, and be mindful of acronyms that may not be familiar.

Unacceptable behavior

Harassment in any form will not be tolerated. This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Offensive comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental health, race, ethnicity, religion, body size, age, or technology choices.
  • Unwelcome sexual attention or advances.
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following.
  • Sustained disruption of talks or other events.
  • Photographing or recording people without their consent.
  • Publishing other participants’ private information without explicit permission.

Reporting

If you experience or witness behavior that violates this Code of Conduct, please contact the workshop instructor (see About) directly — in person, by email, or via the workshop chat channel.

For UO-specific concerns, the UO Office of Investigations and Civil Rights Compliance can also receive reports.

Reports will be handled confidentially. The instructor will work with the reporter to determine an appropriate response, which may include a private conversation, a public statement, removal from the workshop, or referral to UO authorities.
